Description
A rich, deeply spiced, and impossibly smooth caramel apple cider made in a slow cooker. This recipe recreates the nostalgic taste of a grandmother’s kitchen using fresh-pressed cider, real caramel, and whole spices.
Ingredients
- 1 gallon (3.8 liters) fresh-pressed apple cider
- 2 cups (480ml) caramel sauce
- ½ cup (100g) dark brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons (30g) unsalted butter
- 3–4 cinnamon sticks
- 6–8 whole cloves
- 1 teaspoon (2g) whole allspice berries
- 2 strips orange zest (peeled with vegetable peeler)
- 1 teaspoon (5ml) pure vanilla extract
- Optional: Bourbon or dark rum for serving
Instructions
- Tie the cinnamon sticks, cloves, allspice, and orange peel strips in a cheesecloth sachet or leave them loose in the slow cooker.
- Pour the apple cider into the slow cooker.
- Add the brown sugar and caramel sauce to the cider.
- Add the butter and vanilla extract.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 4-6 hours. Do not cook on HIGH.
- Stir well to combine. If using a spice sachet, remove it. If spices were loose, strain the cider through a fine-mesh sieve into a pitcher.
- Ladle into mugs and garnish with a cinnamon stick or rosemary. Add bourbon or rum to individual mugs if desired.
Notes
Use fresh-pressed apple cider, not apple juice, for the best flavor. Do not rush the cook time; low heat is essential for deep flavor. Adjust sweetness by adding brown sugar or balancing with apple cider vinegar. Keep warm on the ‘Warm’ setting for parties. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 5 days; do not freeze.
