  • Author: Lisa
  • Total Time: 50 minutes
  • Yield: 16 servings 1x

Description

These savory sausage pinwheels feature a creamy cream cheese and cheddar filling wrapped in crispy phyllo dough and seasoned with everything bagel spice. They are perfect for game day, tailgates, or quick snacks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz (225g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup (100g) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 lb (450g) mild pork breakfast sausage
  • 2 tablespoons everything bagel seasoning
  • 3 stalks green onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 package (12 sheets) phyllo dough, thawed
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon extra everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  1. Cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbled. Drain thoroughly and blot with paper towels to remove grease. Let cool slightly.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar, cooked sausage, minced garlic, sliced green onions, and 1 tablespoon of everything bagel seasoning. Mix until well combined.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  4. Unroll phyllo dough and keep covered with a damp towel to prevent drying. Layer 6-7 sheets of phyllo in the baking dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  5. Spread the sausage mixture evenly over the phyllo layer.
  6. Layer the remaining phyllo sheets on top of the filling, brushing each with melted butter. Press down gently to seal.
  7. Freeze the assembled dish for 20-30 minutes to firm up the filling for easier slicing.
  8. Remove from freezer and cut into 1-inch wide strips or squares. Sprinkle tops with remaining 1 teaspoon of everything bagel seasoning and a little extra melted butter.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy. Let cool for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Ensure the sausage is well-drained to prevent soggy phyllo. Keep phyllo dough covered with a damp towel while working to prevent cracking. Freezing the assembled dish before slicing is crucial for clean cuts. Can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 2 days or frozen unbaked for up to 1 month.
