Fall Pumpkin Spice Latte: Best Homemade Syrup

  • Author: Lisa
  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: Makes enough syrup for multiple lattes

Description

A homemade pumpkin spice latte syrup that uses real spices and maple syrup for a rich, authentic fall flavor without artificial additives. This recipe allows you to control sweetness and creates a cozy morning ritual.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 12 shots espresso or 1/2 cup strong coffee
  • 1 cup milk (whole, oat, or almond)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, combine water, granulated sugar, and maple syrup. Stir gently.
  2. Add cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, and black pepper to the saucepan. Whisk until sugar is mostly dissolved.
  3. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  4. Reduce heat to low and simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. The syrup should thicken slightly.
  5. Remove from heat and let the syrup cool completely in the pan to allow spices to infuse.
  6. Pour the cooled syrup through a fine-mesh strainer into a mason jar or airtight container to remove spice particles.
  7. Seal the jar and store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  8. To assemble, brew espresso or strong coffee and pour into a mug.
  9. Add 2-3 tablespoons of the homemade syrup and vanilla extract to the coffee; stir well.
  10. Heat milk until hot but not boiling, then froth if desired.
  11. Pour the frothed milk over the coffee mixture and top with cinnamon or whipped cream if desired.

Notes

For best flavor, use fresh spices. The syrup thickens as it cools; add warm water if too thick. Do not use pumpkin puree as it affects texture and shelf life. For a boozy version, add 1 tablespoon of bourbon after cooling.
