Classic Southern Peach Cobbler: Best Easy Recipe

  • Author: Lisa
  • Total Time: 60-65 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

A rustic, forgiving, and easy-to-make Southern peach cobbler featuring a buttery biscuit topping and syrupy fruit filling. This recipe requires no pie crust skills and delivers intense peach flavor with a caramelized, crunchy top.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 67 medium fresh peaches, peeled and sliced (or 2.5 lbs frozen peaches, thawed and drained)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar (100g)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (15ml)
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch (15g)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (120g)
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed (113g)
  • ¼ cup milk (60ml)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Extra granulated sugar for sprinkling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Place a baking sheet on the rack below the intended baking position to catch drips.
  2. In a large bowl, toss sliced peaches with sugar, lemon juice, cornstarch, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Let sit for 10-15 minutes to macerate.
  3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold cubed butter using a fork or pastry cutter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with pea-sized butter chunks.
  4. Stir in milk and vanilla extract until the dough forms shaggy clumps. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour the macerated peaches and their juices into a 9×9 inch baking dish. Drop spoonfuls of the biscuit dough over the peaches, leaving gaps for bubbling.
  6. Sprinkle the tops of the biscuits with extra granulated sugar.
  7. Bake for 45-50 minutes until the topping is golden brown and the sauce is bubbling vigorously. If browning too fast, cover loosely with foil for the last 10 minutes.
  8. Let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set.

Notes

Keep butter cold for flaky biscuits. Macerating peaches draws out juices for better sauce. Use a baking sheet below to catch bubbling syrup. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Leftovers can be refrigerated for 3 days or frozen for 2 months.
