Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies: 30-Min Easy Treat

  • Author: Lisa
  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 24 cookies 1x

Description

Rich, chewy chocolate chip cookies with a deep, nutty brown butter flavor. These cookies offer crispy edges and soft centers, coming together in about 30 minutes for a perfect weeknight treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter
  • 2 ¼ cups (280g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¾ cup (150g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (200g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (340g) semi-sweet or dark chocolate chips
  • Flaky sea salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter: Melt butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Stir constantly until it smells like toasted nuts and turns golden brown (5-8 minutes). Pour into a heatproof bowl to stop cooking and let cool slightly.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: Whisk together flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
  3. Cream sugars and butter: In a large bowl, whisk the cooled brown butter with granulated and brown sugar vigorously for 2-3 minutes until light and fluffy.
  4. Add wet ingredients: Whisk in eggs and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Combine wet and dry: Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing just until the flour disappears. Do not overmix.
  6. Fold in chocolate: Stir in chocolate chips with a spatula until evenly distributed.
  7. Scoop and bake: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Scoop 1.5 tablespoon dough balls onto sheets, spacing 2 inches apart. Bake for 12-15 minutes until edges are golden but centers look soft.
  8. Cool and salt: Let cookies sit on the hot pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt while still warm.

Notes

Ensure butter is cooled but still liquid before mixing with sugar to avoid melting the sugar. Do not overbake; centers should look soft as they will firm up while cooling. Dough can be scooped and frozen for up to 3 months. Store baked cookies in an airtight container with a piece of bread to maintain softness.
